Making Memories is the parent companion journal to My Memory Maker.
Journaling allows parents to record their own feelings, thoughts and memories of
their aging loved one. The journal provides a tremendous modeling example and powerful
teaching tool to children. It also provides adult caregivers with an important memory
resource of their own unique journey, as well as precious time for themselves, which is
often a scarce and valued commodity to caregivers.
Making
Memories contains a section called Tools
of the Trade for Parents, and it explains how to use the journal set. It gives
insightful journaling suggestions for adults as well as children. Also provided is a
resource section entitled What Works, which cover the following topics,
among others:
|
|
|
|
|
- How to Tell Your Children
|
|
|
|
- Legal and Medical Information
|

Making
Memories also contains a resource
guide of suggested readings and various Alzheimer's related connections
available through the Internet, as well as a glossary of essential terms.
In addition, it contains colored coded journal
pages and a scrapbook section, which adults will find especially
helpful in organizing their memories.
Making
Memories also has a reference
guide of caregiver network support such as websites for caregivers and on-line
support groups and message boards as well as suggested readings.
Often, the caregiver has little or no time to join a local
support group, but by keeping a journal and using the Internet to reach others who
share common experience, the caregiver has an opportunity to release
thoughts and emotions during the small amount of time they can can call their
own.
Journaling is a powerful healing activity
for Alzheimers patients and their families, and using Making Memories provides the caregiver with a place to write about the experiences
they are facing. Often caregivers feel isolated and alone; keeping a journal provides them
with a useful tool to get in touch with their feelings.
